HALAL SLAUGHTERING COURSE (HALJOB)

SARAWAK, January 27-February 2, 2013 - USIM has organised a Halal slaughtering course (HALJOB) conducted by the Institute of Halal Research & Management (IHRAM) in collaboration with the Halal Industry Development Corporation (HDC), the Sarawak Islamic Religious Department (JAIS), Veterinary Division of Sarawak Department of Agriculture and the Sarawak Islamic Religious Council (MIS) at the Dorset Boutique Hotel, Kuching, Sarawak.

HALJOB was intended to provide opportunities and qualification for individuals for a wider working environment and thus reduce unemployment. It was attended by 27 participants consisting of local people as well as representatives from the industry. During the course, participants were being exposed to knowledge from the aspects of aqidah, slaughtering from the Shariah perspective, standards, protocols and licensing of abattoirs and communication skills.

Participants were also exposed to the training activities within the group (LDK) to develop self-reliance, integrity and teamwork. In addition, participants also visited a number of abattoirs around Kuching and were exposed to the practical of slaughtering in which each participant was given the opportunity to undertake practical training individually.

Among the lecturers involved were Dr Hj Muhmad Kamarulzaman Hj Muhmad Sarif (former Director of the Veterinary Department), Mr. Mohd Jabal Abdul Rahim (HDC), Dr Adrian Susin Ambud (Veterinary Division, Sarawak Department of Agriculture), Mrs. Hajjah Asmawaty @ Siti Asmah Ahmad (JAIS) as well as USIM lecturers i.e Assoc. Prof Dr Alina Abdul Rahim (IHRAM), Assoc. Prof. Dr Mohd Fauzi Mohd Amin (FPQS), Dr. Ahmad Wifaq Mokhtar (FSU), Mrs. Norhayati Rafida Abdul Rahim (FKP) and Mr. Mohd Mahyeddin Mohd Salleh (FSU). In addition, HALJOB also got a special coverage throughout the course by TV Al Hijrah television station.

The closing ceremony was held on the last day of the course officiated by Ir Datuk Hj Daud Abdul Rahman, the Junior Minister at the Chief Minister’s Office (Islamic Affairs) & Junior Minister of Infrastructure Development. According to him, the Sarawak government will continue to provide support for USIM to organise such courses in the future. In addition, he suggested that HALJOB would also be held in other areas such as Miri and Sibu, Sarawak because there are a lot of abattoirs in these locations as well as targeting a total of 100 accredited butcher in the state. Also present at the closing ceremony were the President of MIS, Datu Hj Putit Matzen and Jais Director, Hj Abg Shamsuddin Abg Seruji.
